EDUCATION IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN AFRICA
Children Green World Vision
Organisation nu.: 996 092 151. Bankkontonr: 2135.302.6566 Website: childrengreenwv.vpweb.no

Purposes of ChildrenGreen World Vision:

-The Association is formed to prevent the escape from rural areas by promoting sustainable and diversified agricultural production. we aim at addressing in particular children and young people in whom we want to initiate love for farming and expertise to cultivate in an interesting and fruitful way. Children Green World Vision is a Christian organization that believes in a healthy and sustainable management of man's creation as gift and task.
Escape from the countryside is a worldwide problem. The cities are growing in many places on a poorly planned manner. Those who leave for the city often have to live in slum areas, and the supply of labor is not in compliance with the crowd. Urban areas choose qualified people and young people from rural areas are not competitive.
So they need skills to stay and contribute in rural development.
-At the same time CGWV is trying to address an ever-growing food crisis in which large areas are also vulnerable to deforestation, desiccation, soil erosion and reduced biodiversity. Africa, Eastern Europe and India are potential fields of engagement, and we are in the initial phase in Mali, West Africa.

Children Green World Vision in Mali:

In Mali the NGO was registered in october  2011. (Autorization download) National manager / representative and local networks are currently engaged. Our national representative in Mali, Pastor Tiowa Diarra, is working on projects in cooperation with the Children Green World Vision Chairperson in Norway. He is also the leader of Africa Tentmakers International a network aiming to foster missions.

Practical objectives:

-We intend to establish a school on the outskirts of the Ségou city, located at 230 kms East from the Capital city, Bamako. There the government has planned to establish an agriculture faculty.
-We would like to offer young women training in the varied diet and nutrition, possibly also sewing. Cultivation of vegetables in small gardens will provide a grant to a healthy and varied diet. We are promised as a gift two smaller properties for the school for young women and 10 ha for farming. However we still await the donation.  The smallest property we intend to use for growing vegetables for education purposes. The property for the school is situated in the outskirts of the city. The school was intended to be built when we have the means, and after farming and teaching are established on the agricultural property on the  savanna site nearby.  However,  this property could be sold to get more funds for small demonstration and production farms.

-We  teach short courses in practical agriculture and related processing, mainly for the age group 16 - 25 years in the villages.  In the outskirts of Segou we were engaged until 2015. We are  now working   in the village area "Dafara" outside Bamako to provide better farming methods.See report from 2013 course here. This may later include improved nutrition and diet, and increased access to renewable energy and improved stoves etcWe know of well-functioning integrated cultivation methods that could substantially increase food production and open up for personal interest and give new hope. The most important method is "Conservational Farming" which we are teaching in a Christian context called "Farming God’s Way" or Foundations for farming". See also a short manual by Øystein Haugerud on this method with some additions concerning soil structure: "Sustainable farming for smallholders

-One also aims at large biological diversity where also agro forestry with trees and various crops in different floors will be employed. It is important to encourage the gradual increase in production and capital investment (ladder approach – cf. Drylands Coordination Group, Nordagric (UMB).
-Simple local production of agricultural implements and other things that are useful in life in rural areas may eventually be initiated, and also in this field establish practical education.

-The knowledge in the above fields exists in Mali, but our main task is to make it available in practical life and increase production to meet basic needs and provide sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.
  • Approach and survey
We will be there with an open Christian life and confession in which dialogue with and input from local people is a natural part. We  prepared a survey(doble click "survey" to see the budget,  and the survey document in french:enquête socio économique) that was implemented in the villages near the farm property in December 2011. The survey touched the issues on agriculture, nutrition, employment, job opportunities, energy resources and needs. This in order to better meet the needs in the best possible way. We also addressed the churches in the area with the survey to look at opportunities for collaboration. Download the summary here. A pastor from Segou, Daniel Fané, has together with our leader pastor Tiowa Diarra, conducted a course in farming Gods Way for farmers attending local churches in Segou.  The course took place in April 2012 and released excitement and joy among the participants who could see new possibilities arising in the country of Mali threatened by drought and shortage of food supply.  Watch pictures from the course by downloading by clicking the links on the bottom of the homepage and the french page.  Also in march 2013 we  conducted courses in Farming Gods Way in Segou and in the village area Dafara outside Bamako. The farmers that implemented some of the know how were followed during the growing season.  We are extending our network of workers who will be engaged in spreading the know how  by training in depth those that implement the training.  We have made an agreement with the pioners who have implemented to make a demonstration plot with full implementation in 2014.    See report here from growth season 2013.  In 2015 and 2016 we had a group of farmers in the Dafara region,  and they are increasing their engagement and field area with the farming Gods way methods.  In 2017 they will also test different sowing times in relation to rain pattern and early mulch cover to preserve the water from the early rain.  They will also test relay with cowpea and different sowing time for the cowpea.  We also encourage the use of different bio control methods and the planting of morringa trees.

  • Land resources management
We have been promised as a gift 10 hectars of savannah, located 8 kilometers from the town where we will start farming of fruits, vegetables, cassava and cereals such as maize, millet, sorghum, etc. We will construct cultivation fields with the appropriate methods for demonstration, education and production. In addition, we may expand production through the dry season with irrigation. This is to show the top step of the ladder of investment and production opportunities, and for the production and sale of products to further funding of the projects and teaching. It is also relevant with fish pond, egg production, etc.  We want to engage local people who do not dispose of their own farmland,  and who would like to cooperate closely with us to establish the fields of production and field experiments.  They will take the yield, and in some years build their abilities and capital to buy and start their own farm.
A preliminary 5 years plan for the work based on the farm was made in 2011 before we decided to lend out for free to farmers who lack farmland.  However some idea of possibilities are illustrated. Download here: 5 years plan.  The farm property has unfortunately been held back from transfer to the organization,  changing our approach so far to give courses in the villages.

For Projects’ development, CGWV needs engagement and contributions of many kinds from partners both individuals and organizations

  • Contribution to projects with materials and equipments
Now:
- Printer, copy and fax machine to the office.

- Motorbike for local transport in Dafara

- Hand tools and horse items that have a good technical solution in no-till farming. Some tools for horses may be adapted for donkey or ox. If necessary, we can modify models for production of new tools locally in Mali to the need.

-Pedaldriven irrigation pump for renting out in our village projects.

Later:
- Utility Vehicle or car combined for transport of goods and people.

- Irrigation pipes, pumps, water hoses, drip hoses, etc. Solar panels to power pumps.

- Unit for production of electricity - petrol or diesel driven.

- Two-wheel tractor for conservational farming without turning the soil.

  • Contribution to projects with personal expertise and skills
- Interested farmers and advisory service people with the desire and time to help with advice and deed.

- People with accounting and or administrative, office experience, knowledge of English and/or French.

- Anyone with expertise as blacksmith. It might be possible to take some time in Mali and initiate production. In the future we may recruit a talented Malian blacksmith.
-Skills or know how with water dispensers production, solar oven, "Wendelboe oven" for cooking, and more tools useful to ordinary households.  There are also building instructions for simple home made ovens with a very good combustion available.
-You can just give tips and be in communication with us.

- People with building experience in/for Africa. (When properties become awailable)
As stated above, we will build simple farm buildings, and a single, simple teaching building on the farm property.

- Good Gyro ideas.

Please note that all work, including administrative work is done without any payment.  Only people from the country where the projects are conducted are employed or waged.

  • Contribution to projects with money:

-The immediate needs are: Courses in the villages with transport and wages for the leader and teachers,  office and real estate costs. For 2017 we budget ca. 60.000 nkr.  Longterm:  fence, drilling, house, manager wage for farm property, latrine. Cost for investments on farm property is approximately nkr 425.000 . See budget
-Additional needs: simple building for kitchen and meals service on the farm and theoretical education; chicken house and pond for fish breeding. Eventually we hope the project's own production can finance part of the modular teaching in agriculture. Therefore it is important to have these investments made as soon as we get the properties. We may also get farm land in the Dafara region where we can implement the farm.   Cost of additional needs will be communicated further.
